"Teen raises more than $1 million for children in need".

BRITISH COLUMBIA - Over the past six years, 13-year-old Jeneece Edroff has raised more than $1.1 million for B.C. children in need, an accomplishment that was celebrated at this weekend's Variety Show of Hearts telethon.
"It feels really good because it helps kids," said Edroff, who knows first-hand the problems children with illnesses face.
When she was three years old, she was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a disorder that causes tumors to grow throughout her body. Two weeks ago, she underwent spinal surgery, and is returning to hospital today. She began fundraising when she was seven, collecting $164 for Variety, one penny at a time. This year, she launched a major campaign through coin drives at schools and business across the province. Her efforts paid off. She raised more than $400,000 - part of the $8,173,945 total raised at the 42nd Variety Show of Hearts telethon.
Last year's telethon raised about $7.5 million. Shortly before the 23-hour-long event ended Sunday at 6 p.m. Edroff learned that her fundraising efforts over the past six years have totalled $1,100,133. The charity has helped her own family cope with medical costs.
"Just to have them pay for meals at the hospital meant so much. When you're exhausted from being there all day, the last thing you want to do is cook," said her mother, Angie Edroff. "They helped with everything from vouchers to Safeway to modifications for our van, things we couldn't afford otherwise. I can't explain how much it alleviates worries."
This weekend, volunteers, including firefighters, local celebrities and politicians, manned about 200 phones at the event, which featured recorded performances from stars such as Michael Buble and Andrea Bocelli and personal vignettes of children affected by the charity.
About 40 per cent of Variety's funds, raised primarily from the Show of Hearts event, is allocated for grants to individuals and families coping with childhood illness, said Variety's executive director Barbie Hislop.
"It's overwhelming to see the generosity in this province of people willing to help kids with special needs," she said. Variety receives more than 1,000 applications each year from families seeking assistance for specialized equipment, therapies and costly pharmaceuticals. The rest of the money is donated to organizations such as Canuck Place and the Downs Syndrome Research Foundation.

“Raising Pennies for Jeneece Edroff” – Mr. Mennie’s Grade 8 & 9 Math Classes
Insert from Newsletter: December 4, 2007 Issue: #7
$600 in pennies was raised to help Jeneece Edroff, who is attempting to reach her goal of raising $1 million for BC Children’s Variety Club. The Club helps children in British Columbia who have special needs. Jeneece is undergoing 2 major surgeries on her spine at the beginning of December and will hopefully be walking again in the New Year. CK News & the AChannel came to St. Andrew’s Regional High School to record the handing over of the pennies by the students to Jeneece and her parents on Mon., Nov. 26th, 2007. Mr. Kevin Mennie first became aware of Jennece when he was watching AChannel News cast during the summer (while held up on the sofa with his cast). The Math classes began collecting pennies at the start of October and ended midNovember. Classes generally rolled all the pennies during the last few minutes of class. The students were very enthusiastic to collect the coins and help Jeneece in her cause. Mr. Mennie predicted $100$ 200 in total, but was amazed that the winning class alone (Math 8H) ended their drive with over $200. He found it difficult to store all the pennies in his classroom during the drive, but was extremely pleased with the effort put forth by all the students. Anyone interested in helping Jeneece with her fund raising, can check the website

The Variety Club Telethon Fundraiser - "Kids Helping Kids" .
It is our privilege this year to be contributing towards The Variety Club Telethon, which takes place this month. This week, the children of Sunnyside Preschool, along with it's Director, Tearcher Darlene Chan and a few parents, will headout to a very special field trip taking them to CH Television station to drop-off their donations to the Telethon.
Jeenece Edroff is a former student of Sunnyside Preschool - it will be a wonderful experience to spend part of the morning with her while she not only receives the children's donations, but also has the opportunity to reuinte with her former teacher and share some of her experiences with everyone.
CHILD1st.ca will be present, not only because this is one of the causes it is contributing to this year, but also due to the fact that Leonardo, co-founder this organization, is a current student at Sunnyside. His father, Ricardo, a regular fieldtrip parent volunteer will be present as well, and as usual, making sure to produce some memorable photographs...
Photos of the filedtrip will be prepared and profiled on this page soon after the special event.
UPDATE - The fieldtrip was a huge success. The donations were delivered and well received. The children had a wonderful experience and so did Teacher Darlen and the participating parents. Enclosed are some temporary photos, while others are being prepared for uploading as well. The news profled the story three times this past Friday, February 15th at 5, 6 adn 11 pm. We are in the process of preparing a digital video of the tv story, in order to share with everyone via this website (coming soon).
